Leaving the service is harder than most people expect, and it's rarely about the work itself. Plenty of veterans can find a job. What's harder to replace is everything that came with it: the mission, the standards, the people who had your back, the sense that what you did each day actually mattered. A lot of civilian roles can't offer that. Security work, done the right way, can.
Citadel was founded and is led by U.S. military veterans, and that isn't a line on a website. It shapes how the company runs. There's structure here, and clear standards, and an expectation that you'll be held to them, which is exactly the environment a lot of veterans miss the most. The discipline that felt second nature in uniform is an asset on this job, not something you have to leave at the door.
The skills carry over more directly than in most fields. Situational awareness, staying calm under pressure, thinking clearly when a plan falls apart, looking out for the people around you, these aren't things we have to teach a veteran. They're the core of the work. What we add is the specific training and the path to grow, and the foundation is already there.
There's also the part that's harder to put on a job description: the people. This is a team that understands service, that takes the mission seriously, and that looks out for each other. For a lot of veterans, finding that again, the camaraderie and the shared sense of purpose, is the thing that finally makes civilian work feel like the right fit instead of just a paycheck.
And there's room to move. Citadel promotes from within, and a lot of the people leading sites and teams started as officers. The advancement is structured, the training is real, and the effort you put in is the thing that moves you forward. For someone used to earning the next step, that's a familiar and welcome way to work.
A uniform doesn't have to be the last one you wear with pride. For many of the veterans here, this is a second mission, and it's one worth showing up for.
